Choosing a Manufacturer

Log Home Manufacturers: A Comparison Guide

Comparing different log home manufacturers? As it should be. For many, buying a log home or cabin is their first experience with the lumber industry. Here are some key considerations to take into account to best help you compare apples to apples:

Manufacturer Experience and Reputation

These days, it’s best to question any “reviews” you find online. We recommend contacting any manufacturer you’re considering, even if their online presence isn’t stellar, to ask for referrals. Why? Because talking to a real person about their experience without filtering or editing is the best testament to a company’s value. If they’re unwilling to offer any or simply point to online reviews, it’s worthy of note.

Also worth considering is the manufacturer’s years of experience in the industry. A long-standing and well-regarded manufacturer is the best bet.

Location and Availability

Most manufacturers provide local pick-up, but finding a manufacturer that ships nationwide at a reasonable price isn’t always easy. That doesn’t mean you’re limited to a local shop, though. Asking the following questions can help you to vet for manufacturers that align with your project’s needs:

  1. Does your home quote* include shipping? (Eg. For us, the answer is YES.)
  2. What is your shipping window (Eg. Ours is within eight weeks from the signed contract.)

Delays can impact your project schedule, so choose a manufacturer with reasonable timelines. Once you get these answers, it’s easy to see how their location and/or availability will factor into your decision-making.

*Note: An estimate is different from a quote.

Quality & Craftsmanship

Evaluate the types of logs and materials used. High-quality, sustainably sourced logs are essential for durability and appearance. Investigate the manufacturer’s construction methods and craftsmanship. High-quality workmanship ensures a sturdy and well-built log home.

Design Options & Customization

Determine the level of customization you desire and the level of customization each log home manufacturer allows. Some companies have a wide range of log home styles, floor plans, and models to select from. Some manufacturers offer more flexibility to tailor designs to your needs and style preferences.

At CK, we’re in the business of custom log homes. While our model options are ever-expanding, we consider them a starting place. Our true talents lie within the design process and creating log homes that are uniquely one-of-one.

Warranty and Support

A strong warranty policy for a lifetime purchase makes a massive difference. And having responsive, expert support throughout your project can provide peace of mind with no price tag, just immense value.

At Cedar Knoll, everything we provide comes with a warranty, and it’s our guarantee that your experience is our top priority. Learn more.

Permitting and Regulatory Compliance

Many new buyers may not realize that building regulations differ from state to state and even county to county. It’s essential to ensure your manufacturer isn’t willing to cut corners, sell blindly, or put forward deceptive pricing just to bait and switch.

For example, we always include a note on our 6×8 logs to remind potential clients that some areas do not permit that log dimension for domicile applications. During our design phase, we take the bulk of the responsibility to meet all local building codes and regulations. Offering this assistance saves you time and money during the permitting process and protects you from any heartbreak down the line.

All-in-all, whichever log home manufacturer you choose should align with your project’s specific needs, budget, and priorities. Your choice should give you confidence in the quality, craftsmanship, and support throughout the log home construction process and beyond.
